Down Under Flashback
Has it been 10 years? Checked the date and yes, ten years ago on September 19th 2000, I touched down in Australia during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games to join up with a Contiki tour. Ahh, the memories…
Wow, time does fly. Heh, it took that long for me to post the photos on Flickr. Then again Flickr was not around when I toured Australia. I repeat….Wow. This was an interesting time in camera technology, as digital cameras were recently introduced into the market. I know of two tour mates, Paul (?) and Jerry Pipes, who used 1 megapixel digital cameras that also took video. If I recall, the images and video were stored on floppy disks. Jerry has had his photos and video posted on his blog, Planet Snewpy. Jerry’s photos can be found HERE and video HERE
We are also coming up on the 10th anniversary of the attack of the USS Cole. I was scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef when the attack occurred. It seemed so surreal at the time as I was insulated in a scuba divers paradise and the world appeared to be erupting.
Here is my flickr set of photos from Australia taken without the benefit of a digital camera. Enjoy:
For my photography friends, most of the photos were with an Olympus SLR, film obviously. Near the end of the trip, I inadvertently destroyed the Olympus by dropping the camera into chlorinated water. Photos titled with either ‘Cape Tribulation’ or ‘Daintree River’ were taken with a disposable camera, as were the underwater shots.
As for the rest of the tour group the thought, ‘Where are they now?’ has crossed my mind. Alive and well, I hope.
