Swedes Study Their Plates

STOCKHOLM — Shopping for oatmeal, Helena Bergstrom, 37, admitted that she was flummoxed by the label on the blue box reading, “Climate declared: .87 kg CO2 per kg of product.”

A dairy farm near Uppsala is among the Swedish companies now focusing on the carbon dioxide emitted in food production.

“Right now, I don’t know what this means,” said Ms. Bergstrom, a pharmaceutical company employee.

But if a new experiment here succeeds, she and millions of other Swedes will soon find out. New labels listing the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of foods, from whole wheat pasta to fast food burgers, are appearing on some grocery items and restaurant menus around the country.

People who live to eat might dismiss this as silly. But changing one’s diet can be as effective in reducing emissions of climate-changing gases as changing the car one drives or doing away with the clothes dryer, scientific experts say.

Silly Swedes. What you won’t see is any empirical study noting the direct correlation of a change in global climate by adjusting a diet around this new measurement. You most likely will see the Swedish government taking these calculations and using them to ban foods based on their carbon dioxide rating.

In effect, American environmentalists are preventing responsible development here at home while supporting irresponsible development overseas.

V: The Series is coming back to the small screen on November 3rd. I’m sure you all remember the series first aired in 1984 and featured lizard-like aliens that disguised themselves as human who offered peace, but secretly plotted the subjection of all humanity to their will? No? Okay, the re-imagined version is apparently being ’softened’ – as reported by Tom Jicha:

The teasers running on ABC offer a hint of this. “They gave us hope. We gave them our trust.” Who does that bring to mind? Of course, the Visitors (hence the title), after promising things like universal health care and peace in a one world government, turn out to be totally evil. They attempt to seize control of the media, favoring those who don’t challenge them or ask probing questions about their real agenda, which turns out to be the annihilation of humanity. The heroes are everyday people, who form a grass roots resistance movement. Supposedly, the show is being slightly re-conceptualized to soften or remove events some might interpret as negative parallels to today.

Ohhh…I’ve got a new sci -fi show to blog about!

One of my favorite features on this blog is the ‘featured video section. I appreciate the ability to promote a worthy video for my readers (and lurkers) to view.  The video posted on the left is the trailer for an independent film entitled ‘Not Evil, Just Wrong’.

The documentary created by journalists Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney takes an unflinching look at the human cost of environmental propaganda. One can cite statistics that point out the flawed rhetoric of Greenpeace or Al Gore, but to be able to combine a human story to these academic numbers is pure brilliance.

October 18th, 8pm EST is the date set for the global premier of this film. Not surprisingly,  Hollywood won’t touch this film, so the intrepid creators are looking to people like you and me to host a premier viewing party at your home.  Together we can participate in the world’s largest simultaneous movie premier and gain a better perspective of the human cost of arrogant environmentalism.
