Celebrate My Birthday with an Act of Kindness
A few days ago, I discovered a new(ish) feature on Google Plus called ‘Events’. This feature allows the user to create a virtual event, invite friends from their circles, capture photos during the event and post them to one shared photo collection on Google +.
The video below gives a good review of what is possible using the Event feature:
My curiosity over this feature lead me to create an event – my birthday. On a whim I invited a few hundred people from my circles and did not expect any replies. Lo and behold, people did reply and I had to figure out the next step.
I had a thought this afternoon while driving home from work - why not ask those who accepted the invitation to donate an act of kindness in my name on my birthday, August 20th. No matter where they are in the world, they can celebrate my birthday with the gift of kindness towards others. How cool is that!
Tonight I posted on G+ this message:
For those wondering what the plan is or what gift should I bring – the only gift I ask is an act of kindness done in my name on my birthday – August 20th. Wherever you are in the world on August 20th; dedicate a moment, a few hours or the entire day to an act of kindness. Volunteer at an animal shelter, hug your parents, check on an elderly neighbor, donate books, clothing, or food where needed. Indeed, use the day to do what you love. Let me know what you have done on August 20th – leave a comment, link a photo or a blog post sharing your act of kindness.
For those few people not signed up for Google plus, feel free to join in! You can leave a message or blog/photo link in the comment section here. I plan on curating the responses and creating a blog post to display all of them.
If you’re interested in participating, thank you! To participate: On Monday, August 20th take some time during the day to donate an act of kindness, then let me know what you did by leaving a comment, photo or blog post link in the comment section of this blog post or on Google Plus. I’ll stick this post at the top of the blog on August 20th to make it easier to post your story.

Sure beats sending a donation to Obummer. I’m in.
Next year on March 30 you can do the same for me.
Are you sure you don’t want me to contribute some money to the Obama campaign? In your name, of course.
