Event Photography Tips
So, you find yourself going to a national conference and you want to document your experience. Good for you! Here are a few quick tips for a successful event photography.
1. Check and re-check your gear. Do you have the appropriate lenses, extra memory cards, extra batteries, lens cleaning kit and snoot? If bringing a Speedlight – did you check the state of the batteries? Bringing a tripod? Have you checked to see if you are allowed to use a tripod at the conference. Pack a small level or download a level app on your smartphone.
2. Review the agenda to assist you in plotting where and what you want to photograph. Try capturing a story with your photos starting with a beginning, middle and end. For example, grab a few photos of the crowd entering the event, conference signage, portraits of attendees and any interesting detail that catches your eye. It is these types of photos that generate interest in the rest of your conference photo collection.
3. Don’t stand on the sidelines with your camera, go ahead and jump right in the action. Uhm…unless it is firewalking! Set your camera to burst mode and take your photos. You will regret every missed opportunity.
